The West Liberty community is again planning to help a local family with proceeds from the 19th annual Ice Cream Social to be held 4-7:30 p.m. July 23 at the West Liberty United Methodist Church, 202 W. Newell St. This year the West Liberty United Methodist Church, the West Liberty United Church of Christ and the West Liberty Lions Club are joined by Grace Chapel Church to help the Jon and Shannon McGill family.
Shannon McGill has had migraine headaches for two years. She developed the headaches after a dental procedure to remove a chipped tooth resulted in damage to the nerve along her jaw. She worked for the Sellman Insurance Group as an agent, but left the job due to pain medicine affecting her ability to think and the pain affecting her ability to function.
After many visits to neurologists and the emergency room, when the pain became severe, she was referred to the Diamond Headache Clinic in Chicago. It is associated with St Joseph’s Hospital for inpatient care. She has spent a total of seven weeks in the hospital since February, in addition to outpatient visits. The expenses of the trips to Chicago and the loss of her income has strained the family’s financial situation and increased the headaches.
Her husband is a son of Dave and Patty McGill and has been a resident of West Liberty since high school. He has taught Special Education classes at West Liberty-Salem for 10 years and was at Mac-A-Chee Learning Center for eight years. He is the defensive coordinator for the West Liberty-Salem High School football team. He attended Campbellsville University in Kentucky, where he met Shannon, who came from Marietta and is the daughter of Debra and the late Wayne Close.
The McGills’ three children attend West Liberty-Salem. Their oldest daughter, Dierdre, will be a junior this fall and is on the varsity soccer and softball teams. Isaiah, their son, will be an eighth grader and plays football and basketball and is a sprinter on the track team. Their youngest is Audrey, who will be a seventh grader. She plays trumpet in the band and is on the soccer team.
The a-la-carte menu will consist of chicken and noodles, hot chicken, sloppy joe and hot dog sandwiches, baked beans, potato salad, slaw, pasta salad, cucumbers and onions, apple salad, Jell-o, pie, cake, drinks and homemade ice cream. All proceeds will go to the family. There will be live entertainment.
If unable to attend, but would like to help the family, send a check made out to the West Liberty United Methodist Church and put “Benefit” in the memo line. Mail the check to the West Liberty United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 606, West Liberty, Ohio 43357. For more information, contact Nancy Dowden at 937-465-4219.
